"Recognizing Service and the Opportunity to Serve"
Welcome to the International College of Dentists Web Site. Whether you are a Fellow of the College or an interested visitor, we invite you to use this "portal" as your source of information about the International College of Dentists and dentistry, in general, throughout the world.
Who are we?
The International College of Dentists (ICD) is the oldest and largest international honorary dental organization established in 1927 with over 12,000 members (designated as Fellows). Fellowship in the College is by invitation only and is granted in recognition of an individual dentist ’s “outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind ”.
Prior to being recognized as a Fellow of the ICD, the candidate ’s qualifications and achievements are evaluated by a series of credential committees in order to insure that he or she is deserving of this honour and will live up to the ICD motto of “Recognizing Service and the Opportunity to Serve ”. Once inducted, a Fellow in good standing is authorized to use the letters “FICD” after his or her name.
2011 President's Corner - December
Final Report to the Fellowship, Reflections and Farewell
When my Presidential year began, I had six major goals in mind for our ICD in the year 2011. How did we do? What were the goals and have they come to fruition? Allow me to list the goals and then offer my take on accomplishments.
1) Increase the College's emphasis on the key characteristics of ICD Fellowship...HONOR AND PRIDE. I have been trying to re-instill in each Fellow the feelings of Honor and Pride they had at the moment of their Induction into the College. All of us felt proud at that moment; honored that our colleagues selected us; and we each sensed that we were a part owner of our College. For many - those feelings go away. I tried to bring back those feelings through personal communications and my President's Notes. Did it work?

The International Council
Much of the individual participation in the formal activities of the International College of Dentists (ICD) is within the autonomous geographical Sections rather than on an international scale. A major exception to that generality is the annual meeting of the International Council of the ICD. The Council is the legislative body which oversees the maintenance and revision of policies, sets the standards for future directions of the College at Large (CAL) and provides a forum for interchange of ideas among the representatives of the fourteen geographical Sections and the unincorporated smaller Regions, administratively designated as a single worldwide Section.
Fellows: Update your e-mail addresses
Please, be so kind as to send your new or updated E-address to your ICD Central Office (CentralOffice@icd.org). Also, you can assist your College by sending to CentralOffice@icd.org:
- Information regarding Fellows who have received an honor, a promotion, published a book, etc., so the College may send its congratulations.
- The date (month and day will suffice) of your birthday.
Student Exchange Program
For many years, the USA Section of the College has sponsored an International Student Exchange Program whose objective is to share knowledge and experiences among dental students of the global community, so that they may embrace and benefit from their insight to oral health within and beyond national boundaries. The program is designed to have pairs of students from US and international dental schools conduct two week reciprocal visits to their partner institutions. Upon return to their countries and schools, they are expected to share their insights of dentistry in other lands with colleagues and fulfill the program’s objectives.
