RECENT NEWS

Maria Teresa D. Amador to Lead Section IX in 2008

I am deeply honored and privileged to be given the opportunity to head this prestigious organization of renowned dentists in our country. Very few are given such recognition and I feel it is my duty and obligation to share something, which will be mutually beneficial to our profession and our countrymen.

Being in the academe for more than half on my life, I believe that the career of a professional commences in the acquisition of knowledge. So foremost in my project for the year 2008 as President of the ICD Philippines Section Inc. is to organize a Faculty Development Program.

Faculty members from different dental colleges in our country will be invited for a seminar on the latest trends in the Methodology of Teaching Dentistry. The end in view of this exercise is to encourage and motivate would be dentists their proficiency in dentistry.

With regards to our countrymen, we will adopt an orphanage to give dental education and treatment not only to the orphans but also to the helpers and sisters who takes care of them. The other is the municipality of Cainta, where we will be installing free dentures to the poor people in that municipality.

Projects started by the previous leadership of ICD will be continued like our coordination with Gawad Kalinga and the leadership training for graduating dental students.

One of my projects includes the encouragement of all Fellows to invite more dentists with leadership potentials to be members of the ICD. Let us seize this rare opportunity as part of ICD to avail the bountiful benefits derived from this international organization such as invaluable information regarding state of the art and innovative dental practices, sharing experiences between and among members of international sections and regions of the ICD by being interconnected through the internet to fully develop the organization’s international capabilities.

Indeed, with the invaluable help and cooperation of our members and officers, past and present, I see no reason why we cannot succeed in our noble endeavor.

Let me wish all Fellows of the ICD worldwide, a fruitful year ahead.

The objective of the program is to develop the leadership skills of the dental students through a series of lectures and team-building activities. Topics include: professionalism and ethics, legal rights, practice management, post-graduate & training options, as well as an inspirational talk.

The program aims to further mould our students to be practical, efficient, smart, confident and with a strong sense of social responsibility. But most of all, we hope to develop them to be future leaders in their own right.

PAST PROJECTS OF SECTION IX

We have revived our ICD Newszette, which came out last August 12, 2004 during the 1st Quarterly Meeting in the hope that this could be a good vehicle for constant communication among Fellows. This will run every quarter from hereon.

We are proud to announce that we are embarking on a new community project entitled Orally Healthy Preschoolers (OHPs) to be spearheaded by the Community Development Committee under Fellow Paciencia L. Miravite as Chair and Fellow Irma L. Parajas as member. This project will concentrate on the oral health care of preschoolers, i.e. from ages 0 to 59 months.

Herewith is the project proposal:

Project Title: Orally Healthy Preschoolers (OHPs): A Community Oral Health Care Project of the ICD Philippine Section

Project Partners: ICD Philippine Section, Quezon City Health Department (QCHD) Dental Division, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)

Project Target: 100 children enrolled in a day care center

Project Site: Day Care Center at Project 6, District 1, Quezon City, Metro Manila

Project Duration: 2 school years

General Objective: to render total oral health care for the preschoolers in a pilot day care center

Specific Objectives:
At the end of 2 years, the project will be able to:

1. increase the knowledge, attitude, and skills of teachers, mothers, and preschoolers between 20% to 30% of the baseline

2. reduce the incidence of dental caries of preschoolers by 10%

3. increase the filling rate of carious teeth of preschoolers by 10%

4. decrease the extraction rate of primary teeth of preschoolers before exfoliation by 50%

5. maintain at least 60% of sound teeth of the preschoolers at baseline

6. decrease the prevalence of gingivitis of the preschoolers by 50%

7. establish an effective oral health information system for preschoolers

Meanwhile, the ICD Philippine Section has its Community Development Program chaired by Fellow Irma L. Parajas and co-chaired by Fellow Ma. Fatima S. Dizon. The Community Development Committee has launched its Oral Health Project for 2001-2002. This is a collaborative oral health project for the 1,500 first, second, and third grade pupils of Pag-asa Elementary School in Quezon City.

The project aims to provide comprehensive oral health services with the following objectives:
1. Reduction of the incidence of dental caries and gingival disease
2. Making the children aware of good oral health, teaching them good oral habits, and helping them develop positive attitudes to oral health
3. Involvement of parents and teachers in attaining good oral health of school children

In order to successfully implement this project, the following services will be provided:
1. Oral Health Education
2. Preventive services such as oral prophylaxis, fluoride mouth rinse, and application of sealants
3. Curative services such as extraction of teeth which can no longer be saved and restoration of carious teeth
4. Monitoring and evaluation

The pupils of Pag-asa Elementary School enjoy themselves as they are being taught tooth brushing.

The ICD Philippine Section in collaboration spearheads the ICD Oral Health Project 2001-2002 with various agencies such as Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Philippine Childrenâs Medical Center, the Department of Education, and the Quezon City Dental Society. The rationale for collaboration is for sharing of resources as well as an assurance of sustainability and continuity of activities.

The principal and teachers of Pag-asa Elementary School discuss the details of the oral health program with Fellows Irma L. Parajas and Ma. Fatima S. Dizon Development Project Committee.
